Soundpost is a Sheffield based artist led organisation that coordinates a range of participatory events, exploring folk traditions through practical workshops, performances, debate and discussion.

What We Do

We firmly believe that performance is essential to learning more about your craft.

It is also important to listen and watch others do the same. We’re lucky to work with our board members and folk music professionals Jon Boden (Bellowhead) and Andy Bell (Hudson Records) on a series of shows at The Royal Hotel in Dungworth, Royal Traditions. To see who is performing this year see our events page.

Throughout the year Soundpost hold Day Long Workshops where you’re given the chance to work closely on a particular subject with a professional visiting tutor.

These could range from an Advanced Fiddle Workshop with Sam Sweeney to a Kids Ceilidh Workshop with Jess Arrowsmith and everything in between.

See more about what Day Long Workshops we have coming up on our events page. If there is a particular subject you’d be keen to learn more about or you would like to recommend an artist or tutor, please drop us an e-mail.

If you are interested in a regular workshop event please take a look at our weekly Folk Factory adult sessions held in Dungworth Village Hall, led by Nicola Beazley.

Fantastic opportunities to completely immerse yourself in traditional folk music.

We bring the UK’s top folk artists, folklorists and academics to lead workshops, sessions, discussions and more on a topic they’re passionate about. This intensive event is held in the glorious rural setting of Dungworth on the outskirts of Sheffield. Participants are encouraged to learn something new, feel equipped to go develop new skills, passion and a desire to keep improving. We also encourage friendships and networks to flourish with people from across the country.

Soundpost have been developing their schools projects over the last few years, introducing the vibrant world of traditional English folk music to children across the city.

Recent projects include the Sheffield Carol Project, The Soundpost Folk Factory Project, Spring Sing and our Folk Factory after school clubs. So far we have hosted ceilidhs at summer fayres, BBQs and holiday clubs where pupils, teachers and parents all got stuck in and had a great time dancing together. Our after school clubs have performed at BBC Makes Music events and the very popular Our Cow Molly Ice Cream Palour!

The fantastic Nicola Beazley runs our two Folk Factory after school clubs which run weekly at both Carfield Primary School (from November 9th 2017) and Dungworth Village Hall (from September 2017). There will also be an adults group in Dungworth too so everyone can get involved.

The Carol Project has been a great success the last few years and kicks off in November with workshops across 4 Sheffield schools. The wonderful Bryony Griffith teaches local children the Sheffield carols and the project, in collaboration with Sheffield University, finishes with open workshop performances accompanied by Bessemer Brass and TUOS folk at the impressive Firth Hall.
